The RoleAs
Principal Sales Engineer (reporting to the Regional Sales Director), you’ll be the senior technical face of the business for
UK Public Sector accounts. You will lead technical discovery, shape best-fit solutions, and deliver compelling demonstrations that clearly differentiate value — acting as a trusted advisor to government customers, integrators and service providers.
This role blends deep hands-on presales expertise with stakeholder influence and market awareness. You’ll partner closely with sales, product and engineering to accelerate revenue and customer outcomes in complex, secure environments.
What You’ll Do- Own technical discovery & presales across the full sales cycle for UK Government/Public Sector opportunities.
- Design and deliver high-impact demos and presentations tailored to mission and security requirements.
- Differentiate solutions with clear, outcome-driven value stories vs. competitors.
- Act as the senior technical authority across government, integrators and service providers.
- Influence product roadmaps by relaying customer and market feedback to Product & Engineering.
- Contribute to technical content: RFP/RFI responses, solution designs, whitepapers and documentation.
- Mentor Sales Engineers; attend key meetings alongside them and elevate team capability.
- Build deep customer relationships, uncover upsell/expansion paths and advocate for customer needs internally.
- Represent the company at industry events, speaking engagements and strategic initiatives.
Where & How You’ll Work- Home-based (UK) with regular travel:
- Client meetings 3–4 days/week (typical)
- Annual company conference
- Quarterly Sales Engineer convention
- Location preference: Central or Southern UK preferred; Northern England considered for exceptional talent (Scotland not preferred due to travel patterns).
What You’ll BringEssential background
- 15+ years in IT, including 10+ years in presales, network engineering, or technical support.
- Proven success supporting UK Government/Public Sector in secure environments.
- Ability to translate complex technical challenges into clear commercial value.
Deep technical expertise- Cisco routing, switching, gateways & applications.
- TCP/IP, SNMP, NetFlow, VoIP.
- LAN/WAN topologies: MPLS, Frame Relay, ATM.
- Security concepts and network infrastructure design.
- Network performance & fault/alert management.
Solid understanding- Operating systems: Linux, Windows.
- Cloud & virtualisation: SDN/NFV, Public/Private Cloud.
- Performance/Operations tools: HP OpenView (HP/OV), IBM Tivoli, EMC SMARTS, ArcSight.
- Certifications: CCNA/CCNP/CCIE (or equivalent experience).
- Formal presales training: e.g., Sandler, Siebel, Afterburner.
- Outstanding communication & presentation (verbal, written, visual).
- Comfortable with 60–70% UK travel.
Desirable- Degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering (or equivalent technical military training).
- MBA or relevant business/leadership qualification.
- Knowledge of products such as Arbor, Radware (listed as Radwhere), Riverbed, A10, ExtraHop.
- Experience authoring whitepapers and contributing to product strategy.
- Familiarity with security audits and RFP/RFI processes.
- Track record of mentoring technical presales teams.
